magazine gave it a good review and it's the Media
Book Club's book of the week. Both the fan reviews
its been given on amazon.co.uk are also great! It
features chapters on all ten feature-length films
Boyle has directed, from Shallow Grave to Slumdog
Millionaire (and including Trainspotting, The
Beach, 28 Days Later and Sunshine).

Jai hai, Jai hai, ….Jai ho, Remember when India
got Miss India , Miss World titles, one after
another few years back. Suddenly Indian feminism
appeared to find its definition, style and
expression. And with this, international
cosmetic and fashion brands got a huge market for
their products in India! Now in time of
recession, world just need hope. And who will give
that. Of course it is ‘Slumdog Millionaire’.
Hollywood will find a huge market with English
knowing people for their products. We have very
good number of Multiplexes! And hope this will
help them in the time of recession. Now they will
have an opportunity for movie production out
sourcing . India has the maximum number of slums
for cast, crew and location. With good number of
English knowing people and multiplexes, it will be
all win win situation. I hope now every Indian
will have a level playing field through MPOs
(Movie Production Outsourcing) centers which will
be mushroomed in and around every slum like
locations. Jai Ho….

Perhaps Aadesh thinks this way as he is spending
more time in LA than in mumbai. Anyone who has
been to mumbai knows the film has actually
potrayed the slums decently and a toned down
version. At least Jamal Mallik had a wooden shack
to defecate in privacy. take a train ride on the
harbour line or drive by sion or kurla and you can
see hundreds of people shitting in open air thats
the real mumbai where more than 50% people live in
slums.

What's the point in taking Rehman and Anil to
court over the films's name.. and I dunno whether
this is being disrespectful but I find it weird
that India has a Slum Dweller's Association.
Whaa..? When did it get created? What are the
objectives of setting it up? I'm sorry but I

India has slums and poverty and people existing on
$1 a day, isn't it? over 35% of the poplulation is
poor. so did Danny create something, that was not
there? Danny has also shown the developing side of
Mumbai. So give it a rest.

Who is this guy? Let me tell you, as an Indian
living in the US, the American response to this
film has been overwhelmingly positive. No one is
going around calling Indians slumdogs. Rather, my
Americans friends were all in awe of the film and
repeatedly advised me to go see it... and wow, as
an Indian, I am SO proud of this film. I hope
this guy is enjoying his soundbite. Just like
every other bitter Indian film industry wannabe
that is jealous that they were not a part of such
a beautiful film that really portrays a
heartwarming story of triumph while providing a
necessary escape in these difficult economic
times. So Mr. Aadesh, enjoy your soundbite. Your
criticism pales against the beauty of the movie
and the acclaim, both from critics and from fans.

I think its great, that this movie is causing such
a stir, if its the only way the problems of the
slum's get recognised then so be it. None of us
are ever going to help these people. I mean if
kids who acted in this movie are going from the
slums to the Oscars and some way to a better
future, then i think the movie is done its job.

Are their not huge slums and poverty in Mumbai and
the rest of india? Yes their are, ignoring them
would be offensive and do nothing to help solve
the very REAL problem. This was a movie about
people from the slums. If you want to watch a
movie about rich or middle class indians, their
are plenty of other films out their.

Slumdog millionaire was a celebration a rags to
riches story. It is is interesting the people who
are most critical about the film are the haves.
Let us acknowledge there is poverty in India for
if we can we can work to eliminate it.

It is interesting to read the comments from
different class, this movie shown a reality of
Indian cities. I accept little that it is more
exaggerated. But it is the truth that our majority
of population is still living in one meal a day.
About bollywood movie, they are always tried to
sell people dreams, not the reality. Sometime, It
is interesting to watch Hindi movies that
doesn’t have any reality or never talk about the
common people problems (Heroes and heroine eat
burger for breakfast, use chopper to go to
office). Mainstream Hindi movies folks don’t
have any right to criticize this movie.

Its truly interesting to see people who have faded
into oblivion garner publicity by hook or
crook...So mr. aadesh wouldn't do a film about
slums which is reality, but he wouldn't mind doing
mindless films with no shred of reality.....thats
what hindi cinema is about.......he is more
bothered about how mr. bachan is potrayed or what
people would think about india abroad but he
wouldn't move his little finger to do anything
about the slums at his doorsteps.......what a two
faced fool.....no indian would do such a film in
the first place because it would then be art house
and not make any money and thats what the hindi
film industry is 'a money making racket'....all
this is just a case of grapes are sour.

i do agree what aadesh is saying....as an indian i
cant appreciate a moovi which portraying indian
slum only...slum cities are in all parts of the
world but we indians never think once what western
people want to show the entire world...its
shameful that we r giving more than hype to this
moovi...if any indian director direct such moovi
then i dont think it will get recognized.can
anybody tell me why they appreciate only those
moovi which portrays indian slum,poverty,crime n
all....deepa mehta n meera nayar all shows this
kind of contents in their moovies....i feel
shameful...wat aadesh is saying is very
true...they will suppose us as slumdogs now...

I don't understand what all the fuss is about the
film. Yes it’s an ok film, but I don’t know
why it’s been nominated for so many awards.
I’ve seen far better Bollywood films over the
years which didn’t get nominated for Oscars
purely because they were classed as foreign films.
I think it’s absolutely ridiculous that “have
approached the State and the National Human Rights
Commission for necessary action to be taken
against Rahman and Anil Kapoor”, I’m fairly
sure neither Rahman nor Kapoor had a hand in
giving the film a name. Films like this can only
get India more noticed in the international market
and I feel that it opens up more non-Indians to
watch Bollywood films, I know several people
who’ve already asked my advice about good Hindi
films to watch as I said I wasn’t impressed
enough with SM to understand why everyone was
raving about it!

Pamela, your last paragraph...Danny has already
done that. he(or the slum dog producers) have
taken the responsibility of those slum kids for
education and all till they become 18 year old.
after that they will be given their share of money
for his movie. and this was done so to avoid those
slum kids parents not using those kids money for
wrong reasons. Danny is a great man to do that.
and he did this even before slumdog became such a
big hit. if it wasnt this big still they had done
that for those slum kids.

It was embarrassing to see Anil Kapoor to jump up
when Danny Boyle won at the golden globe... It
reminded me of the time when Titanic won and...
said "I'm the king of the world!" It wasn't
received well. I read the book when I was in
India and the book was a fast read but not dynamic
like the film. What made me pick up the book was
that a poor kid gets on the millionaire show.
What a great idead I thought. The rest of the
book had a lot of conincidenes like bollywood
films. AR Rahman's music as always deserved its
credit and also made the film. The film is not
about good acting at all which bollywood actors
overdo. The film was how Danny took us through
the gullies of india and told us a great
story. What would be great is if Danny not only
paid those poor kids which will be snatch away
from them but also set up a college fund or
education fund to get those kids educated so they
have a good future and really get out of the
slums. It wouldn't be much money.

Scenes of poverty and squalour may appear romantic
to Westerners and to our snooty elite but for
ordinary Indians they are an everyday reality. One
wonders what sort of mind can find such images
aesthetically pleasing. Party-hopping socialites
(for example, Shobhaa De after all her bombast of
"enough is enough", went and watched a pirated
copy!) who are distanced from such reality may
find this film an "eye-opener" but for us it IS
just poverty-porn. Leaving that aside, I have six
other objections to the film. 1) The director
seems to RELISH showing violence. Some of it (like
the police-torture) is quite needless. And why was
the boy arrested in the first place? On what
charge? Was it realistic? 2) How can a boy
growing up in slums speak such accented English?
Even if one assumes that the language he actually
uses to communicate with the game-show host and
the police officer is Hindi (granting the director
the creative license to use a language better
suited for international audiences), there are 2
instances where it is stretched too far: (a) when
the boy becomes a ‘guide’ for foreign tourists
at the Taj Mahal & (b) when he becomes a
substitute-operator at the call-centre.

Big B is really a great actor but he is completely
wrong. And it shows his shallowness. We have seen
many movies like this but they are not successful
as the presentation is not as nice as Slumdog M.
He is rich and looks at the rich India. He should
notice the povery even in Bombay by just walking
on the roads of the non-exclusive n'hoods.

I respect Big B for whatever he has achieved which
every man can't. When it comes to Slumdog, I feel
that the picturization is the ground reality of
India which has become a scapegoat of politics,
bureaucracy. It is just one class of society
which becoming rich and rich and rich and poor are
becoming poorer day by day due to the stinking
system which exists. We are just better than our
neighbors and we can compare ourselves with only
them (You would know about whom I am referring
to). I think that if Big B has got a difference
of opinion, then he should try living in slums for
some days then he would really understand what
exactly happens there and how people die for their
day to day meal or starve to death. Infact Big B
is in such a position that he can initiate a
change in the system because of his popularity.
Slumdog is the ground reality of India and we
should not shy from that.

if the article's reporting of SRK's behaviour is
correct then this is a pretty sorry state of
affairs. No one would argue about the status SRK
has achieved with his audience globally and he is
a skilled actor. His behaviour is contemptuous and
gives us, Indians, a poor press. I hope SRK has
the humanity to apologise if he did indeed behave
in the manner reported.
